A motherboard must match the CPU socket, and its chipset must support the CPU family: for example, Ryzen 9000 works on every AM5 board, but on A620/B650/X670 only after a BIOS update. Pick your CPU below — we will show matching chipsets out of 50 per AMD and Intel specifications as of Oct 8, 2026.
The chipset also decides overclocking (Intel allows CPU overclocking only on the Z series, AMD on all chipsets except the A series and B840), the number of USB ports and PCIe lanes. The picker covers 311 desktop CPUs in the FPSHQ catalogue.
(BIOS) — support comes with a motherboard firmware update; check the CPU list of a specific board on its maker’s website.
In short
Which motherboard does my CPU need?
A motherboard fits a CPU if the socket matches and the board chipset supports the CPU family. Per AMD and Intel specifications as of Oct 8, 2026, the FPSHQ database has 50 chipsets for the AM4, AM5, LGA1151, LGA1200, LGA1700, LGA1851, LGA2011 and LGA2011-3 (X79/X99) sockets. For example, Ryzen 9000 works on every AM5 board, but on 600-series chipsets only after a BIOS update; 13th–14th Gen Core CPUs run on Intel 600-series boards with new firmware and on the 700 series without it. Intel allows CPU overclocking only on Z chipsets, AMD on X and B (except B840). The FPSHQ picker shows compatible chipsets for 311 desktop CPUs in the catalogue, marks where a BIOS update is needed and suggests the best chipset; always check the CPU list of a specific board on its maker’s website.
The CPU and board sockets must match, and the board chipset must support the CPU family — sometimes only after a BIOS update. Pick your CPU in the picker above: we will show matching chipsets out of 50, mark where a BIOS update is needed and give the FPSHQ tip. Then check the supported CPU list of a specific board on its maker’s website.
Will a Ryzen 9000 work on a B650 board?
Yes: per AMD, all AM5 boards are compatible with all AM5 processors, but Ryzen 8000 and 9000 on 600-series boards (A620, B650, B650E, X670, X670E) may need a BIOS update. 800-series boards (B840, B850, X870, X870E) support Ryzen 7000, 8000 and 9000.
Will a 13th or 14th Gen Intel CPU work on a B660 board?
Yes, after a BIOS update: Intel 600-series chipsets (H610, B660, H670, Z690) support 12th Gen Core, and 13th and 14th Gen with firmware that adds this support. 700-series boards (B760, H770, Z790) support 12th–14th Gen.
What is the difference between AMD A/B/X and Intel H/B/Z chipsets?
Higher-end chipsets give more PCIe lanes and USB ports and allow overclocking. On Intel, CPU overclocking is only available on the Z series; memory overclocking on Z and, from the 500 series, on B and higher H chipsets (except H510, H610, H810). On AMD the CPU can be overclocked on X and B chipsets (except B840), but not on the A series. Detailed numbers are in the table.
Can I put an 11th Gen Core CPU on an H410 or B460 board?
No: per Intel’s specification, H410 and B460 support only 10th Gen Core. 11th Gen works on H470 and Z490 (after a BIOS update) and on all 500-series chipsets.
Methodology and sources
Chipset specifications come from Intel ark (each chipset’s page) and AMD AM4/AM5 chipset pages, checked Oct 8, 2026. Compatibility: socket (for LGA1151 — generation) and the CPU family in the chipset’s support list; “BIOS” — per the chipset maker, firmware with support is required. The FPSHQ tip is a rule, not data: without overclocking — the newest mid-range chipset without a mandatory BIOS update; for overclocking — the newest one with CPU overclocking. Fields missing from the official source are shown as “—”. More about the methodology →
