In short

How do I choose graphics settings in a game?

First pick your monitor resolution and an FPS target (60 for single-player, 120–144 for competitive games), then the highest preset that holds that target. If FPS falls short, lower the heavy settings — ray tracing, volumetric effects, shadows and reflections — and enable upscaling (DLSS, FSR or XeSS).

FAQ

How do I choose graphics settings in a game?
First pick your monitor resolution and an FPS target (60 for single-player, 120–144 for competitive games), then the highest preset that holds that target. If FPS falls short, lower the heavy settings — ray tracing, volumetric effects, shadows and reflections — and enable upscaling (DLSS, FSR or XeSS).
Which preset should I use on a mid-range graphics card?
For GeForce RTX 3060-class cards the High preset at 1080p suits most popular games; for GeForce GTX 1060 6GB-class cards — Medium or Low. The exact preset for each game is on its settings page.
Where do the FPS numbers come from?
From the FPSHQ unified FPS model: a regression on thousands of real measurements (reviews, video tests, user submissions) with corrections for the specific game and GPU. If a real measurement exists for the pair, it is used instead.
Where does FPSHQ get its data?
From four sources: official developer and Steam system requirements (161,753 games), hardware manufacturers' specifications (1,965 GPUs, 456 CPUs), FPS measurements from reviews, YouTube and players (105 independent measurements and 4,800 rows of aggregated review data), and the FPSHQ model where no measurement exists — always labelled "estimate".
