Why memory got pricier: DRAM prices in 2026

TrendForce forecasts for DRAM contract prices — wholesale prices for manufacturers, not retail module prices; change versus the previous quarter. Retail prices usually follow contract prices with a lag.

How we calculate

We use official system requirements only: the game’s Steam page or the publisher’s site. Estimated requirements are never used; a game page is indexed only if the developer states a recommended amount of RAM. The minimum is what the game should launch with; the recommendation is for comfortable play at recommended settings. The 8/16/32 GB verdict is a direct comparison with these numbers. “Comfortable” is an FPSHQ rule: the recommendation plus 25% for the OS and background apps, rounded up to a two-module kit. The yearly trend uses medians by release year, groups of at least 5 games. Gamers’ RAM comes from anonymous FPSHQ PC scans over 365 days (no IPs or accounts; small groups hidden). Memory prices are published TrendForce forecasts with their publication date; we do not recalculate them. More about the methodology →

16 or 32 GB of RAM — which to buy in 2026?
By game requirements, 16 GB covers 97% of the catalog and 32 GB covers 100%. Go for 32 GB if you play new demanding games, stream, or keep a browser and Discord open while gaming. The trend is rising: 42% of games released in 2026 recommend 16 GB or more.

8 GB covers 62% of catalog games by recommended requirements and 92% by minimum ones. For new games 8 GB is usually just the minimum: expect streaming hitches and stutter.
DDR4 or DDR5 — what matters more for gaming?
Capacity first: if memory runs short, the game streams data from the drive whatever the memory type. The platform decides the type: DDR5 is required for AM5 and Intel LGA1851, DDR4 is used by AM4 and some LGA1700 boards. FPS differences, speeds and channels are covered in the wiki article “DDR4 vs DDR5”.
How much RAM do most gamers have?
According to anonymous statistics of 341 PCs checked on FPSHQ over the past year, 90% already have 16 GB or more.
Why did RAM get more expensive in 2026?
According to TrendForce forecasts, DRAM contract prices rise every quarter of 2026: +90–95% in Q1 (PC DRAM over +100%), +58–63% in Q2, +13–18% in Q3 and +10–15% in Q4 versus the previous quarter. The reason is demand for memory in AI servers. Retail prices follow contract prices with a lag.
Where do the requirement figures come from?
From official system requirements: Steam or the publisher’s site. Only games where the developer states a recommended amount of RAM are counted (30,505 games); estimated requirements are not used.
