The other way round: which GPU for a monitor

How we calculate

FPS comes from the site-wide model: real benchmarks from our database where available, otherwise a regression fitted on thousands of benchmarks with per-game and per-GPU corrections. We use the 20 most popular games in the catalog (high settings) and 9 competitive games (medium settings), GPU-bound like on test benches.

The recommended resolution is the highest one where at least 75% of popular games run at 60+ FPS. The refresh rate is the nearest standard value (60, 75, 100, 120, 144, 165, 180, 240, 360 Hz) not above the median FPS: above it the monitor would show frames the card usually does not render.

With adaptive sync (G-Sync/FreeSync) extra refresh headroom does no harm, but you only see the difference where FPS reaches it. At 240+ Hz the CPU matters too — see the "CPU for high refresh" table.

In short

What monitor do you need for your graphics card

Check how many frames the card renders at the target resolution: if FPS stays below the refresh rate in most games, paying for extra hertz brings nothing. Our table shows the highest resolution where 75% of popular games run at 60+ FPS on high, and the refresh rate by median FPS.

FAQ

How to choose a monitor for a graphics card?
Check how many frames the card renders at the target resolution: if FPS stays below the refresh rate in most games, paying for extra hertz brings nothing. Our table shows the highest resolution where 75% of popular games run at 60+ FPS on high, and the refresh rate by median FPS.
Do I need a 144 Hz monitor if my FPS is below 144?
With adaptive sync (G-Sync/FreeSync) a monitor faster than your FPS stays smooth, but you will not see much difference versus 100–120 Hz. For competitive games high refresh rates make sense: FPS there is usually far higher than in demanding titles.
Where does FPSHQ get its data?
From four sources: official developer and Steam system requirements (157,921 games), hardware manufacturers' specifications (1,965 GPUs, 456 CPUs), FPS measurements from reviews, YouTube and players (106 independent measurements and 4,800 rows of aggregated review data), and the FPSHQ model where no measurement exists — always labelled "estimate".
What is the single FPSHQ FPS model?
One algorithm that, from the GPU score, the CPU gaming score and the game's demand, computes FPS at 1080p/1440p/4K on Low–Ultra presets. The same number appears on every page — games, GPUs, comparisons, calculators — and whenever a real measurement exists it takes priority over the estimate.
