Why GPU/CPU comparisons matter

When you choose a component for an upgrade, the marketing from NVIDIA, AMD and Intel only talks about the advantages of their own products. Only an independent comparison in the same games and scenarios gives the real picture. FPSHQ uses data from TechPowerUp, GamersNexus, Hardware Unboxed and Digital Foundry — independent reviewers with a long-standing reputation.

What you get in a comparison

  • Full specs side by side: CUDA/Stream Processors, clocks, VRAM, TDP, process node — everything that matters for a decision.
  • Progress bars: you can see visually who is stronger and by how much in each category.
  • Prices: factoring in the markups of popular stores.
  • FPS in the same games: Cyberpunk 2077, Helldivers 2, MHW, PoE 2, Elden Ring, CS2 at 1080p/1440p/4K with Ultra/RT settings.
  • Verdict: our expert assessment of "what to choose for your needs".

Frequently asked questions about comparisons

How do comparisons on FPSHQ work?
Pick two models — GPU or CPU — and press "Compare". We show specs side by side, advantage progress bars, prices, FPS in the same games and our "what to choose" verdict. All data is current at the time of comparison.
Which pairs are worth comparing?
Usually people compare: 1) a card of one generation with a rival brand; 2) cards of different generations in the same price range; 3) the current card with a potential upgrade. Comparing an RTX 5090 with a GTX 1660 makes no sense — too different in class.
Why do comparisons include "FPS in games"?
It is the most important section. Pure synthetic benchmarks often do not reflect real gaming. NVIDIA and AMD in the same price range can show different results in Cyberpunk 2077 (NVIDIA better due to DLSS+RT) and Helldivers 2 (AMD better due to pure rasterization).
How do I compare CPUs?
The same way: pick two processors and compare. It is especially useful to compare top AMD vs top Intel (Ryzen 7 9800X3D vs Core Ultra 9 285K) — you will see which is better in games, work and efficiency. AMD X3D chips usually win in pure gaming.
Can I compare a GPU with a CPU?
No, that makes no sense — they are different components. If you want to check whether a powerful GPU will be held back by a weak CPU, use the bottleneck calculator.
Are prices taken into account?
Yes, we update prices daily from popular retailers. The comparison shows the average price and the "how much extra for +10% performance" difference. That is often the deciding factor.
What does "Winner" mean?
The winner is determined by a composite score: performance (45%), price (25%), technologies (15%), efficiency (10%), VRAM/cache (5%). Different models win in different categories — we show this explicitly.
Can I compare old and new models?
Yes, it is even useful if you have an old GPU/CPU and are thinking about an upgrade. The comparison shows the FPS gain and whether it is worth the money. Often a one-generation upgrade gives +25–35% FPS, and two generations +60–80%.
What if a model is missing?
The FPSHQ catalog has 2,400+ graphics cards and 900+ processors. If you cannot find one, message Telegram @denissatoshi and we will add it in 1–2 days. Especially for new releases or exotics like Intel Arc.
How much FPS will an upgrade add?
Compare your current card with the intended upgrade. The calculator shows the bench_score difference, which gives the approximate FPS gain in a typical game. For example, RTX 3060 → RTX 4070 Super = +85% FPS, RTX 4070 → RTX 5070 = +25–30%.
Where can I find historical data?
Each GPU/CPU page lists the release year and the launch price. Our blog also has articles on the evolution of each series (the RTX 40 story, the Ryzen 7000 story) with tests in current games.
