How to top up Steam: official methods and safety

There are three official ways to top up your Steam Wallet: 1) in Steam itself — Account → “Add funds” — with a card or a local payment method Steam supports in your country; 2) a Steam digital gift card that a friend sends straight to your account; 3) a wallet code (Steam Gift Card) from an authorised seller. Limit: funds added plus spent within 24 hours — no more than US$2,000 or equivalent. Never share your password or Steam Guard codes — not with sellers, not with “support”.

Adding funds in Steam: step by step

  1. Open the add-funds page

In the Steam client: click your profile name top right → “Account details” → “Add funds to your Steam Wallet”. Or open store.steampowered.com/steamaccount/addfunds — the address must start exactly like that.

  2. Choose an amount

Amounts are shown in your wallet currency. To reach a custom amount, buy several denominations.

  3. Choose a payment method

The list depends on your account country and location. If a method is missing, Steam does not accept it in your country.

  4. Confirm the payment

After your bank confirms, funds usually appear immediately; some methods (cash, bank transfers) take longer.

What has changed

🛡 Security: how not to lose your account and money

Changing region: what is allowed

Your store country follows where you live. The Steam Subscriber Agreement forbids using IP proxies or other methods to disguise your residence to circumvent regional restrictions or buy at another country’s prices; violations can lead to account termination.

After a genuine move, the store country changes once you make a purchase with a payment method from the new country while located there. According to Steam’s notice, an account’s country can change no more than once every three months.

Gift cards and codes from any country are converted to your wallet currency on redemption — “buying another country’s code cheaper” does not mean getting more.

FAQ

Can I top up Steam with no fee?

Steam does not charge a fee for adding funds — you pay exactly the chosen amount in your wallet currency. Your bank (for currency conversion) or an intermediary may add fees if you buy a code outside Steam.

What is the maximum I can add?

Under the Steam Subscriber Agreement funds added plus funds spent from the wallet within any 24 hours cannot exceed US$2,000 or the local-currency equivalent.

Can I get money back from the wallet?

Funds bought on Steam can be refunded within 14 days if unused. Wallet funds are otherwise non-refundable and non-transferable; Valve does not refund codes bought from third parties.

Can I use a card from another country?

Steam shows payment methods for your account country and location. Hiding your real location (VPN, proxies) is prohibited by the Steam agreement and can lead to account termination.

How long does crediting take?

Card or e-wallet payments in Steam usually appear right after the bank confirms. Cash or bank-transfer methods can take longer — Steam shows the timeframe when you select the method.

Can I transfer wallet money to a friend?

No, wallet funds are non-transferable. You can buy your friend a game as a gift or send a digital gift card from your Steam.
