AMD Error 1603: general driver install error
What this error means
Code 1603 is returned by the Windows Installer service when a package fails to complete — it does not name the cause by itself. Details are in the AMD install log: C:\Program Files\AMD\CIM\Log\Install.log.

-
Install Windows updates easy ≈20 min
Settings → Windows Update → “Check for updates”, then restart. Some components (Universal C Runtime, DirectX 12 updates, scheduler fixes) arrive only this way. Games with modern anti-cheats require a supported Windows 10/11 version.
-
Download the full AMD Software package easy ≈10 min
From AMD’s official driver page for your model (not a web installer from third-party sources).
-
Check your antivirus quarantine easy ≈5 min
Antivirus software can delete or block a game file (often the anti-cheat module or a DLL next to the exe). Open the protection history (in Microsoft Defender: Windows Security → Virus & threat protection → Protection history). If a file of an official launcher game was removed, restore it by verifying files and add the game folder to exclusions. Never restore files from unknown sources.
-
Install Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable 2015–2022 (x64 and x86) easy ≈5 min
One package covers 2015, 2017, 2019 and 2022 — the new one replaces the old. Install both architectures even on 64-bit Windows: 32-bit games and launchers use the x86 build. If the installer says it is already installed, choose “Repair”, then restart.
-
Check system files: SFC and DISM medium ≈25 min
Open Command Prompt as administrator and run in order:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth, thensfc /scannow. DISM repairs the component store, SFC restores damaged system files from it. Restart when done. -
Do a clean driver reinstall medium ≈20 min
Profiles and caches left from the old driver keep failing. NVIDIA: pick custom install and tick “Perform a clean installation”. AMD: the Adrenalin installer has a “Factory Reset” option, or remove the driver with the official AMD Cleanup Utility. If the error appeared right after an update, roll back to the previous stable version from the same site instead.
AMD recommends AMD Cleanup Utility for conflicts with previously installed software. After cleanup — restart and install again. -
Do a Windows clean boot medium ≈20 min
A clean boot starts Windows with system services only — this shows whether a background tool interferes (RGB utilities, “optimizers”, VPNs, old antivirus). Win+R →
msconfig→ Services → “Hide all Microsoft services” → “Disable all”, then Task Manager → Startup → disable everything. If the game works, re-enable apps in groups to find the culprit.

This is a hint based on specs, not a measurement. Browsers cannot see your driver version or power supply model: the FPSHQ app for Windows shows your driver version and real FPS.

FAQ
Error 1603 persists after all steps
Open C:\Program Files\AMD\CIM\Log\Install.log — it shows which component the install stopped at. Contact AMD support with this file.
What does 1603 mean in the AMD installer?
It is a generic Windows Installer error code: some component aborted the installation. Common causes are a pending Windows update, leftovers of an old driver, a damaged Visual C++ or antivirus blocking.
Where is the detailed AMD install log?
The installer saves logs in C:\AMD and %LOCALAPPDATA%\AMD\CN; they show which component failed. These files are also useful when contacting AMD support.
Does AMD Cleanup Utility help?
Yes: AMD’s official utility removes all AMD drivers and software, including registry leftovers. Run it, restart and install the driver again with the internet disconnected so Windows Update does not interfere.
🧭 Nothing helped?
Write down the exact error text and the faulting module from Event Viewer (Windows Logs → Application) and contact the game developer’s support — attach the crash report if the game created one. Also check our related errors.
