Black screen when launching a game

🖥 DirectX, drivers and GPU ⏱ 7 steps · ≈43 min
Takes some timeSeveral possible causes — work through the steps top to bottom
A black screen at launch usually means the game outputs a mode the monitor did not accept (resolution, refresh rate, HDR) or an overlay hooked the output. Press Alt+Enter to switch to a window, change resolution and refresh rate in the game settings, disable overlays and HDR, update the driver. If the black screen happens on the intro video, check codecs (Media Feature Pack on Windows N).

What this error means

It helps to tell symptoms apart. Menu sound but no picture — an output problem (display mode, second monitor, HDR). A black screen for a few minutes on first launch — the game is compiling shaders: wait. Black screen with “Not responding” — the game hung while loading (antivirus, corrupted files). The monitor goes blank with “No signal” — the driver reset or an unsupported refresh rate was selected.

Step-by-step fix: from simple to advanced

Test the game after each step — only move on if the error is still there.

  1. Wait 3–5 minutes on first launch easy ≈5 min

Many DX12/Vulkan games compile shaders before the menu, sometimes without an indicator. Check Task Manager: if the game process is using the CPU, it is working — do not close it.

  2. Alt+Enter and windowed mode easy ≈5 min

Press Alt+Enter — many games switch to a window. Then in the game settings choose Borderless and your monitor’s native resolution. If you cannot see the menu, delete or rename the game’s graphics settings file (usually in “Documents\My Games” or %LOCALAPPDATA%): the game recreates it with defaults.

  3. Disable HDR and the second monitor for the test easy ≈3 min

Settings → System → Display: turn off “Use HDR”. Disconnect the second monitor or TV: some games start on the “wrong” screen.

  4. Disable overlays and on-top tools easy ≈5 min

Overlays inject into the game process and hook frame presentation — a frequent cause of launch crashes and black screens. For the test, turn off: Discord overlay, Steam overlay (game Properties → “Enable the Steam Overlay”), NVIDIA App / GeForce Experience, AMD Adrenalin, Xbox Game Bar, MSI Afterburner + RivaTuner, screen recorders and “FPS boosters”.

  5. Update your GPU driver from the vendor’s site easy ≈10 min

The driver installed by Windows Update is often old and stripped down. Download the current one from the official NVIDIA, AMD or Intel site for your model and Windows version. Your GPU model is shown in Task Manager → Performance → GPU.

  6. Check your antivirus quarantine easy ≈5 min

Antivirus software can delete or block a game file (often the anti-cheat module or a DLL next to the exe). Open the protection history (in Microsoft Defender: Windows Security → Virus & threat protection → Protection history). If a file of an official launcher game was removed, restore it by verifying files and add the game folder to exclusions. Never restore files from unknown sources.

  7. Verify the game files easy ≈10 min

The launcher compares files with the reference copy and re-downloads damaged or missing ones — including libraries the game keeps in its own folder. Steam: Library → right-click the game → Properties → Installed Files → “Verify integrity of game files”. Epic Games: Library → “…” → Manage → “Verify”. EA app / Ubisoft Connect / Battle.net: “Repair” or “Verify files” in the game menu. Xbox app: Manage → Files → “Verify and repair”.

This is a hint based on specs, not a measurement. Browsers cannot see your driver version or power supply model: the FPSHQ app for Windows shows your driver version and real FPS.

FAQ

Black screen only during cutscenes

Check whether you have Windows N (it needs the Media Feature Pack) and update the driver — videos are often decoded by the GPU.

The monitor says “Out of range” or “No signal”

The game chose a refresh rate or resolution the monitor does not support. Reset the game settings file or wait 15 seconds — many games revert if you do not confirm the change.

There is sound but no picture

The game is running but cannot display in the selected mode. Press Alt+Enter to switch to windowed mode, then set the monitor’s native resolution; if needed, delete or edit the game’s settings file to reset the display mode.

Black screen on a second monitor or TV

Disconnect the extra display during launch or make the right one primary (Settings → System → Display). Check the refresh rate and HDR: an incompatible mode (e.g. 144 Hz over HDMI 1.4) results in a black screen.

🧭 Nothing helped?

Write down the exact error text and the faulting module from Event Viewer (Windows Logs → Application) and contact the game developer’s support — attach the crash report if the game created one. Also check our related errors.
