NVIDIA Installer failed: why the driver won’t install

🖥 DirectX, drivers and GPU NVIDIA Installer failed ⏱ 7 steps · ≈88 min
Takes some timeSeveral possible causes — work through the steps top to bottom
“NVIDIA Installer failed” means the installer could not replace the driver files: Windows Update is installing a driver at the same time, antivirus interferes, or the old driver is broken. Restart, let Windows Update finish, download the full package from nvidia.com for your model and choose “Custom → Perform a clean installation”. If that fails, uninstall the driver in Device Manager and install again.

What this error means

The NVIDIA installer sets up several components (graphics driver, HDMI audio, PhysX, the NVIDIA app). “Failed” next to a component means Windows did not let it write or register its files. The most common case is right after installing Windows or a major update: the system installs a GPU driver in the background and the two installers clash.

Step-by-step fix: from simple to advanced

Test the game after each step — only move on if the error is still there.

  1. Fully restart your PC easy ≈3 min

Use “Restart”, not “Shut down”: Windows 10/11 Fast Startup restores part of the system from hibernation after shutdown — including a broken driver state. Close unneeded apps before testing.

  2. Let Windows Update finish easy ≈15 min

Settings → Windows Update: if anything is downloading or installing (including optional driver updates), wait for it to finish and restart. Only then run the NVIDIA installer.

  3. Download the full driver package for your GPU easy ≈10 min

On nvidia.com pick the series and model (“Notebooks” for laptops), Windows version and the Game Ready type. Save the installer and run it as administrator. We list the latest versions for your series in our drivers section.

  4. Do a clean driver reinstall medium ≈20 min

Profiles and caches left from the old driver keep failing. NVIDIA: pick custom install and tick “Perform a clean installation”. AMD: the Adrenalin installer has a “Factory Reset” option, or remove the driver with the official AMD Cleanup Utility. If the error appeared right after an update, roll back to the previous stable version from the same site instead.

In the NVIDIA installer: “Custom (Advanced)” → tick “Perform a clean installation”. It resets profiles and removes the previous version’s files.
  5. Check your antivirus quarantine easy ≈5 min

Antivirus software can delete or block a game file (often the anti-cheat module or a DLL next to the exe). Open the protection history (in Microsoft Defender: Windows Security → Virus & threat protection → Protection history). If a file of an official launcher game was removed, restore it by verifying files and add the game folder to exclusions. Never restore files from unknown sources.

  6. Uninstall the driver in Device Manager and reinstall medium ≈10 min

Right-click Start → Device Manager → Display adapters → right-click the GPU → “Uninstall device” → confirm → restart. Windows temporarily uses the basic display driver; then run the NVIDIA installer again.

  7. Check system files: SFC and DISM medium ≈25 min

Open Command Prompt as administrator and run in order: DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth, then sfc /scannow. DISM repairs the component store, SFC restores damaged system files from it. Restart when done.

This is a hint based on specs, not a measurement. Browsers cannot see your driver version or power supply model: the FPSHQ app for Windows shows your driver version and real FPS.

FAQ

Can I install an older driver version?

Yes: nvidia.com keeps an archive of previous versions. If the failure appeared only with the new version, clean-install the previous one and wait for the next release.

Only “NVIDIA App” or “HD Audio” failed — is that a problem?

For gaming the key component is the “Graphics Driver”. If it installed, you can play; reinstall the other components with a custom install.

Does DDU help before installing?

Yes, if a normal install fails: Display Driver Uninstaller in Safe Mode removes leftovers of old drivers that block the installer. After DDU disconnect the internet so Windows does not install its own driver, then run the NVIDIA installer.

What do “custom install” and “clean install” mean?

In the NVIDIA installer choose “Custom install” and tick “Perform a clean installation”: old driver profiles and settings are reset. You can untick HD Audio, PhysX and the NVIDIA app if not needed — the install is simpler and less likely to fail.

🧭 Nothing helped?

Write down the exact error text and the faulting module from Event Viewer (Windows Logs → Application) and contact the game developer’s support — attach the crash report if the game created one. Also check our related errors.
