What this error means

During an update Steam first downloads data into the temporary steamapps\downloading folder, then patches it into the game files. If the game or another process holds a file open, or antivirus scans it while being written, the error appears. A recurring error with different games on one drive is a reason to check the drive itself.

Step-by-step fix: from simple to advanced

Test the game after each step — only move on if the error is still there.

  1. Close the game and restart Steam easy ≈2 min

Make sure the game process is closed in Task Manager. Exit Steam via Steam → Exit and start it again.

  2. Clear the download cache easy ≈3 min

Steam → Settings → Downloads → “Clear Cache”. Steam restarts and asks you to sign in.

  3. Repair the library folder easy ≈3 min

Steam → Settings → Storage → select the drive → “…” → “Repair Folder”. Steam fixes write permissions.

  4. Check your antivirus quarantine easy ≈5 min

Antivirus software can delete or block a game file (often the anti-cheat module or a DLL next to the exe). Open the protection history (in Microsoft Defender: Windows Security → Virus & threat protection → Protection history). If a file of an official launcher game was removed, restore it by verifying files and add the game folder to exclusions. Never restore files from unknown sources.

Add the whole Steam folder or the SteamLibrary folder to exclusions.
  5. Verify the game files easy ≈10 min

The launcher compares files with the reference copy and re-downloads damaged or missing ones — including libraries the game keeps in its own folder. Steam: Library → right-click the game → Properties → Installed Files → “Verify integrity of game files”. Epic Games: Library → “…” → Manage → “Verify”. EA app / Ubisoft Connect / Battle.net: “Repair” or “Verify files” in the game menu. Xbox app: Manage → Files → “Verify and repair”.

  6. Check the drive medium ≈15 min

Admin Command Prompt: chkdsk C: /scan (replace the letter with the game drive). SSD/HDD health (SMART) is shown by the drive maker’s utility. A failing or nearly full drive causes unpacking and write errors and corrupt game files that verification fixes only until the next failure.

FAQ

Does running Steam as administrator help?

Sometimes, if folder permissions are broken, but repairing the library folder in Steam settings is the proper fix.

Why can’t Steam write files?

Common causes: the library folder is write-protected or permissions are broken, antivirus blocks writing, the disk is full or has errors. Windows Defender’s Controlled Folder Access also triggers it.

How do I check the disk for errors?

In the drive properties → Tools → Check, or run chkdsk X: /f (X is the drive letter) as administrator. For SSDs also check health in the vendor utility or CrystalDiskInfo.

Does clearing the Steam download cache help?

Yes: Steam Settings → Downloads → Clear Download Cache removes corrupted temporary files. Steam restarts and asks you to sign in again; games are not deleted.

🧭 Nothing helped?

Write down the exact error text and the faulting module from Event Viewer (Windows Logs → Application) and contact the game developer’s support — attach the crash report if the game created one. Also check our related errors.
