Core parking on Ryzen 9 X3D: how the 3D V-Cache Optimizer works and what to do when a game runs on the wrong cores
Core parking is a mode in which Windows temporarily idles some CPU cores to save power or steer work onto specific cores. For gamers it matters because of dual-chiplet Ryzen 9 7950X3D, 7900X3D and 9950X3D processors: their extra 3D V-Cache sits on only one CCD, so while a game runs the AMD 3D V-Cache Performance Optimizer driver parks the other CCD to keep the game on the large-cache cores. If parking fails, FPS can drop noticeably.

Why Ryzen 9 X3D parks cores
The 16-core Ryzen 9 9950X3D has two 8-core CCD dies. The first carries 3D V-Cache (96 MB of L3); the second clocks higher with a regular 32 MB. Games love big caches and dislike threads jumping between CCDs: cross-chiplet latency and cache misses hurt 1% lows. So during play the driver parks the second CCD, then returns all 16 cores for productivity work when you exit.
Single-chiplet Ryzen 7 7800X3D, 9800X3D and 9850X3D chips need no parking: all 8 cores share one CCD with V-Cache. The Ryzen 9 9950X3D2 (April 2026) has cache on both CCDs, so the cache-or-frequency choice no longer applies — cross-chiplet latency remains, but matters less.
| Processor | CCDs | 3D V-Cache | Parking needed |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ryzen 7 7800X3D / 9800X3D / 9850X3D | 1 | on the only CCD | no |
| Ryzen 9 7900X3D | 2 × 6 cores | on one CCD | yes |
| Ryzen 9 7950X3D / 9950X3D | 2 × 8 cores | on one CCD | yes |
| Ryzen 9 9950X3D2 | 2 × 8 cores | on both CCDs | less critical |
How it works on Windows and Linux
On Windows the mechanism combines the AMD chipset driver (its 3D V-Cache Performance Optimizer component), Windows Game Mode and the Xbox Game Bar, which detects that a game is running. Requirements: the Balanced power plan, Game Mode on, an up-to-date Game Bar and a current chipset driver. The BIOS also offers CPPC Dynamic Preferred Cores with Driver (default), Cache and Frequency modes.
On Linux, since kernel 6.13 the amd_x3d_vcache driver lets you set a cache or frequency preference via sysfs, and the scheduler then favors the matching CCD.
- Power plan: Balanced, not Ultimate/High Performance
- Windows Game Mode turned on
- Xbox Game Bar updated; tick "Remember this is a game" if needed
- Reinstall the AMD chipset driver after swapping CPUs
When a game runs on the wrong cores
Symptoms: a 9950X3D posts lower FPS and 1% lows than a 9800X3D, and monitoring shows load on both CCDs. Check the steps above first, then open Game Bar (Win+G) and mark the app as a game manually. The last resort is the Cache mode of CPPC Dynamic Preferred Cores in the BIOS: every app then prefers the cache CCD by default, while heavy workloads can still use all cores.
If you're buying purely for gaming, a single-chiplet X3D is simpler: it costs less and needs no parking setup. For how the CPU limits FPS, see CPU bound.
